Capitals again

We are doing homework and correcting paragraphs that are compiled using lower case instead of using capitals where appropriate. Now, I'm okay with most of this but a thread the other day confused me as there is possibly a grey area with regard to use of capitals in sentences such as"I like oranges and apples". Should it be Oranges and Apples? Also is Teacher in the middle of a sentence teacher or Teacher?

oranges and apples should be lower case.

I would also have teacher in lower case as it is not a proper noun

You might give 'teacher' a capital in a sentence like
"I wanted to go to the toilet but Teacher wouldn't let me" but I don't think it looks right myself. If it was 'the teacher wouldn't let me', then definitely no capital.

If you gave 'teacher' caps it would be because you were using it as a name. Like 'mum' can be a noun or a proper noun, depending on whether you are using it as the name of an individual. When your dc addresses you s/he says 'Mum, look at me!' But to refer to mums generally, you'd say, 'We all know how much every mum enjoys Mumsnet.'
