'Drop'

This comes courtesy of Mr Gasp. Don't know the source. Apparently, reading on, it becomes clear that 'drop' here means not 'remove from schedule' or 'cut prices' but 'announce addition to schedule'. Why choose a word that already means the opposite?

Feeling very old and out of touch. Harrumph.

Think it originally came from music, as in 'dropping a new album'. Now widely used to mean launch (product drop/product launch).

I really like words which are their own opposites- contronyms- but this example is very confusing.

LadyDanburysHat · 12/06/2023 10:39

That is so stupid. It's clear what it means when talking about music, even though it's stupid. But in this case it looks like they are getting rid of those flights.

FictionalCharacter · 12/06/2023 10:40

Yep, “drop” means stop doing something. That whole headline is badly worded. If they wanted to use “drop” as in the newer meaning, they should have said “EasyJet drop new schedule announcement” and put all the details in the article. But it’s poor writing.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/06/2023 10:41

Totally nonsensical.

SleepingisanArt · 12/06/2023 10:43

Agree with some of above. They are using drop as in dropping new flights into their schedule. The headline is misleading as the word has 2 meanings and it isn't clear which one they are using.

I hate hate hate the use of the word drop in this sort of context. Also shop, as in shop the new collection. Shop the new drop makes me shudder.

PedantScorner · 13/06/2023 16:00

I read that as 'easyJet no longer fly from London Southend to Amsterdam'.

I read that as 'easyJet no longer fly from London Southend to Amsterdam'.

So did/do I. They've dropped them from the schedule/timetable.
