Why is everyone seemingly saying dates American style

Everyone around me and beyond. On TV etc.

Saying July 1st, May 25th

I really can't bear it! We live in England ! I bet they don't write dates as 07/01/23 etc either !

Nope not heard that. I'm in Scotland though.

worktired · 20/05/2023 23:34

I've seen newspapers, Uk websites writing dates like that - it really annoys me.

VashtaNerada · 20/05/2023 23:53

I saw a trailer for a film today that said “June Eight” as a release date (or similar, I don’t remember the exact date). “June the eighth” is bad enough but “June Eight” is so lazy!

Blueberrycreampie · 21/05/2023 00:01

I think it's been like that since 9/11 ad just become ingrained now🤷‍♀️.

OhMyChickenDinner · 21/05/2023 00:14

This drives me mad too! Once you start noticing it it’s EVERYWHERE.

78gingernuts · 21/05/2023 01:23

I've noticed it to. Boils my piss every time

butterpuffed · 21/05/2023 07:57

@TenseTessa I don't follow what you're saying unless you mean it should be 1st July or 1st of July or July the 1st ?

As for the way obliques are used with dates, you're correct . Americans use it differently , saying month/day/year whereas we in the UK use day/month/year .

BCBird · 21/05/2023 08:00

I agree. We had our school calendar published and I was baffled I was confused! When I spoke to the person about this, he did change it. It does annoy me,but I didn't just contact him.because of annoyance,I genuinely was struggling with it.

FlounderingFruitcake · 21/05/2023 08:02

Ok I’ll admit I do this. But I did live there for years and had to retrain myself to say/think it the American way after registering DD at the doctor with a birthdate of the 7th of September not the 9th of June and then also having to spend an entire weekend correcting a usage stats presentation at work after I confused US and UK dates. I’m really trying to go back to British but it sometimes comes out wrong!

DustyLee123 · 21/05/2023 08:02

We use dates of birth at work and the kids are now starting to say it the American way, which doesn’t help us.
Bit then they also give the postcode first when asked for their address, and I don’t know where that has come from.

TroysMammy · 21/05/2023 08:20

Regarding giving out the postcode I noticed that the other day when handing out a prescription and asking for the first line of the address. I thought it may have been because a) the person was being awkward b) a twat or c) couldn't pronounce the Welsh road name. I can't remember if it was a Welsh road name tbh. If that happens again I'll say "that's not the first line of the address" and especially if they also say "can I get".

I used to work in marketing at a university and prior to that the city’s rugby club and both did this with the dates as a formatting choice. Drove me bonkers.

OMG this drives me bonkers. "In theaters (shudder) July 13".

Not even July 13th (which is bad enough). Why?!

upinaballoon · 25/05/2023 11:39

Laziness.

The same laziness that causes people to say 'there's' instead of 'there are'.

The same laziness that causes people to say 'I could care less' when they mean that they couldn't care less.

Pig laziness and absolute inattention and being prat trendy-Wendies.

Laziness, as in my not writing in proper sentences and being too lazy to think how to use colons and semi-colons.
