What are these words called?

Not really a pedant query but this seems probably the best topic to post in.

Is there a word that describes pairs of words that are anagrams of each other and have the same pronunciation but different meanings?

I've found a surprisingly large number of them and I'm sure I've not found them all. Does anyone have any more to add to this list?

pride/pried
ruse/rues
vise/vies
bear/bare
tied/tide
beer/bere
steak/stake
break/brake
meter/metre
axle/axel
rose/roes
rude/rued
great/grate
discreet/discrete
hose/hoes
meet/mete
prise/pries

There must be more!

Homophones

Words that sound the same are homophones. I’m not sure there’s a special term for anagram homophones though. Homophonagrams?

Kindledino · 28/04/2023 11:44

They're homophones, I don't think there is a specific word that pertains to them being anagrams as well.

Vise and vies aren't homophones though, not in my accent at least.
