That is all. I have just seen these words on another thread.
Kitchen flaw. They were referring to the floor. Not a flaw in the kitchen. The FLOOR. Words fail me.

Well aren't you lovely.

ScentOfAMemory · 08/04/2023 23:28

(Though I imagine if the person you're happy to start a thread about sees this one, your username is apt)

ThisJustFeelsSoShit · 08/04/2023 23:28

This is pedants corner.

OP posts:
SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 08/04/2023 23:29

I have a kitchen flaw, my fridge is too close to the wall so I can't open the door fully 😩

@ScentOfAMemory it's pedant's corner OP is allowed to be pedantic!

ThisJustFeelsSoShit · 08/04/2023 23:30

To be honest I'm not bothered. That is what this section is for.

OP posts:
SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 08/04/2023 23:30

Or rather Pedants' Corner, to allow for more than one pedant 🤪

ThisJustFeelsSoShit · 08/04/2023 23:32

@SmallAngryPenguinWoman I have lots of kitchen flaws too. A row of crooked tiles right beside the cooker🤦🏼‍♀️

Now let's have a pedants' argument about the difference between ground and floor. If a barn has bare earth under foot, can it still be called a floor? Is it still a floor if the roof of the barn blows off? What about if the barn walls are demolished too?

butterpuffed · 09/04/2023 22:32

Floors are inside, grounds are outside, but flaws can be absolutely anywhere.

3luckystars · 09/04/2023 22:35

Maybe it was just a type, some phones do that!

A flea and a fly flew into a flue,
Said the flea ‘let us fly’
Said the fly ‘let us flee’
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

goodnight!!!

3luckystars · 09/04/2023 22:38

Typo!! It just happened there 😁

CPandme · 09/04/2023 22:41

@3luckystars
like it, and I do sometimes get some strange things because I use a mix of typing and voice recognition so if I don’t proofread carefully, such as on MN you get close (voice recognition made close of my flaws.)

WeedKnife · 09/04/2023 22:43

Good grief.

Pedan't corner
What is your point?

Backinntheroom · 10/04/2023 09:48

It gets worse doesn't it OP?!

soddingspiderseason · 10/04/2023 10:03

Aaargh! I sympathise. I am gritting my teeth through so many 'would of' 'could of' 'should of' posts that I fear my enamel will be permanently damaged. This is my first trip to Pedants' Corner as it came up on Active. I feel I may have found a space to finally let go of the angst within.

To be honest I'm not bothered. That is what this section is for.

Maybe pedants' corner should be renamed 'people interested in language' corner (hopefully someone can think of something more catchy🤔).
To avoid this sort of thing...

Yes!!!

OP posts:
ThisJustFeelsSoShit · 11/04/2023 20:32

@Marynotsocontrary yes! Perhaps a name change would help. I wasn't trying to be mean at all. I could not believe my eyes.

OP posts:
butterpuffed · 12/04/2023 08:05

The name doesn't need changing . It's for pedants !

What has changed fairly recently , is pps coming in here to point out errors made by other pps in Mumsnet . When posting about spelling/grammatical errors ,It used to be far more general ~ errors in adverts, newspapers, mistakes on websites, road signs , in shops etc.

sorrynotathome · 12/04/2023 08:09

Well I've seen "draw" instead of drawer, but flaw is a new one for me. So, thank you OP. I think your name is fine.

That's the bit I hate and would like to avoid. The pointing and laughing at other MN users, or people on Facebook etc. Even if OP didn't intend to be mean, it does come across that way.

I do hold journalists and other professional writers to a higher standard.

I'm all for this -- honestly, though, I've never encountered the confusion between 'floor' and 'ground' outside of Mn. I'm not British and no longer live in the UK. Do people actually regularly refer to what is underfoot outdoors as a 'floor'? It seems deeply weird to me. Like confusing 'sky' and 'ceiling'.

I think the barn could legitimately go either way, though.

(I've also never encountered the confusion between 'bought' and 'brought' in real life, so I think of it as a weird Mn quirk, but assuming Mn is full of actual people, presumably this weird quirk actually exists in the wild, too? How? I get that they are near-identical words, and that there are different national usages for things like the distinction between 'to take' and 'to bring', but surely the difference in meaning between 'bought' and 'brought' is so distinct, it's not an obvious confusion?)

newtb · 12/04/2023 12:58

The one that's started to get to me is nob being used for knob. As in bellend.
A nob used to be for a really posh person, possibly from nabob in India.
