It's just 2am!

This is so widespread, see it absolutely everywhere. Drives me mad 🫠

I have a water bottle with times on it, 6am, 9am, 12pm, 15pm, 21pm
It annoys me a lot more than it should

redspottedmug · 17/03/2023 08:53

I agree!

Oh this is infuriating!

Tapenade · 17/03/2023 12:14

I blame Mike Oldfield (although that was “4am in the morning” IIRC)

MorrisZapp · 17/03/2023 12:18

I'm annoyed that people are annoyed by this!

It's just the way people speak. Loads of words we use are redundant but it would be a sad day if we only clipped back to only the exact words necessary to be understood.

JenniferBarkley · 17/03/2023 12:36

I think it's typically used for emphasis.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/03/2023 14:09

And this is why I work in the 24hr clock!

I hear you. And some examples of that I don't mind...

Eg when people say "literally" and don't mean it - eg "I LITERALLY shat myself in that meeting."

But this 2am in the morning one for some reason really gets to me 😂

I remember having this very debate with my DSis yonks ago.

Based on Mike Oldfield's single 'Moonlight Shadow' which includes the immensely irritating line "4 am in the morning"

MrsMorton · 17/03/2023 20:03

This twists my melon.

They could have just as easily said 4 o'clock in the morning.

MorrisZapp · 31/03/2023 16:53

Songwriters know what they're doing. 4 am in the morning sounds much more flowy and ethereal than 4 o'clock. Each syllable is chosen with care.

I've got to get the tea on but I'm well up for a full discussion about this so I'll come back later. Not... too much later though.

AuntieStella · 31/03/2023 18:46

Yes I think "4 o'clock in the morning" would have been better.

He could have gone with "4am that morning" as that could also be sung to fit. (but I don't think it needs to be particularly ethereal as it's a song about murder)

And Simon and Garfunkel. Wednesday Morning, 3am. Possibly the comma helps.

Great tune though.

FawnDrench · 27/09/2023 20:54

It's 0200 hours for some..

pigsDOfly · 30/09/2023 20:06

I'm always annoyed by 12am and 12pm.

It's midnight and noon, or if you can't do without emphasis: 12 midnight and 12 noon.

I've tried re-writing that line. "Four o clock in the morning" would have worked.

That's just as bad surely?

If it's midnight or noon then obviously it's 12.

That's redundant information just like saying 2am in the morning.

tootsweetss · 10/10/2023 00:57

... although honestly at 1am at night I'm not sure we need to be worrying about these kinds of things 😇

Yes, there is absolutely no need for the '12' but if you read my post again you'll see that at the beginning of my second paragraph I wrote 'It's 'midnight and noon'.

I then added 'if you can't do without emphasis: 12 midnight and 12 noon.' That was aimed at anyone who might need a clearer indication of exactly when midnight and noon occur.

As so many people now say 12am and 12pm it seems that midnight and noon are terms many people have never come across.

It's pedants' corner, of course we need to be worrying about these kinds of things, even at 1 in the morning😉

Why would it be sad?
