I read somewhere that when people use these words they are not being honest with you and now I've thought about it I think this is true in my experience.

I use just a lot when I am being honest eg 'just wait a minute' to dc. Or maybe I'm not being honest, sometimes they might have to wait more than a minute.

VintageGardenia · 08/02/2008 18:02

Apparently the same is true of people who start sentences with "actually".

And "apparently".

Jackstini · 11/02/2008 23:02

Or if they begin a comment with "to be honest"

policywonk · 11/02/2008 23:03

Argh, I do the 'to be honest' thing all the time and it's a verbal tic - I'm not a compulsive liar. Honest.

Wotznotreallyhere · 11/02/2008 23:04

I just totally disagree,
No I really do!

PortAndLemon · 11/02/2008 23:10

DS (3) uses them a lot.

"Don't do that, DS."
"But Mummy, I am just trying to [insert random activity]"

colditz · 11/02/2008 23:12

I say "To be fair" a lot.

Does this mean I'm not?

bookwormmum · 11/02/2008 23:18

They're qualifying statements, justifications or waffle.

Only £999.99 or £1000. Which sounds less?

"I was just about to get up Mum"

"I was only doing 30mph officer"

.

Only in relation to shop prices makes me cringe actually.

Jackstini · 12/02/2008 09:07

Sure you are v fair Colditz
Policy - I believed you until that rogue 'honest' at the end...!
