Do people misspell this because they mishear it (like would 'of' which I can understand, albeit wrong), they've copied someone or what?

The word is etcetera - the second sound is a t, why do they put c??

My dad always types/writes ect drives me mad as I’ve told him so many times.

...and quite a lot of folk say, "Ec setera", because they weren't taught it in English lessons and they didn't do Latin.

I am going to burnish my halo here. There have been times on other threads when I have written out 'et cetera' in full.😇
