i read a joan collins interview where she said her grandchildren call her "glamma" (lo's way of saying grandma apparently iirc)

i LOVE that

i want to be "glamma" too, will insisnt on it

My mother (a fearsome stickler) made me write my thank you letters to "Auntie". She told me that "Aunt" was too formal and "Aunty" was incorrect.

This thread is bringing back memories of the chore of thank-you letters for totally unwanted presents ... i can still see a vile blue nailbrush in the shape of a bath with an elephant made of soap sitting in it.

I will insist on Grand-Mere and will wear an intimidating breton cap when my grandchildren are brought to kiss my hand before bed.

Thank you all! Will use Auntie...
dd is too young to have Aunts rofl

I insist on nieces and nephews using my first name. I like the way it winds their parents up.

I have always thought Auntie, but now I am an aunt it doesn't look right next to my name (Nicki) so sometimes I do just put Aunty

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 01:56

naily and onebat - have yours always used the first name? in our family we normally use auntie and uncle until the children reach about 10 and then they sort of outgrow it and use first names.

seeker · 31/01/2008 05:17

Neither - Mary is nicer without Anutie or Aunty. If you must, though, Aunt Mary is marginally OK.

onebatmother · 31/01/2008 09:23

nappy yes, always.. We were very progressive

Hulababy · 31/01/2008 09:26

We spell it "auntie"

Hulababy · 31/01/2008 09:27

I don't like "aunt" on its own - looks soo stuffy and forma.

I no longer call any of my auntie and uncles that, just by their first names. No doubt DD will do that also as she gets older, as a teen and upwards. But I think it is nice for little children to use auntie and uncle terms. Not old fashioned at all.

saltire · 31/01/2008 09:28

I am Auntie saltire to my neice and nephews. However, I call my 2 aunts, one of whom is 80, the other 70 "Aunt X and Aunt Y". Then with my 99 year old Great Aunt I call her Auntie X

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 09:37

hmmm maybe i will start it. at the moment ds just says darrrrr (darren). tbh i don't think i ever refer to them as auntie kirsty and uncle darren - i just hadn't realised it!!
