Does anyone else hear Gloria Gaynor on "I Will Survive" singing "you think I'd lay down and die" and want to scream at the radio "it's LIE down, you stupid woman!!" ?

Also Paul Weller on the Jam's "English Rose": "For nothing can ever tempt me from she." EH??

And Morrissey on "Sweet and Tender Hooligan" - his fans think he's erudite, but anyone who says "eck-setera" should be shot...

'You and me, you and me, lots and lots for us to see'.

yep, definitely me, not I.!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 30/01/2008 15:06

I'm sure Chris Martin knows his nominative from his accusative. He was probably just being oh so witty and ironic

Peter Sarstedt sings "With your carefully designed topless swimsuit
You get an even suntan on your back and on your legs"

It's a bikini.

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 30/01/2008 19:59

..and talking of Beatles, one that gets me every time from Paul McCartney: Live & Let die "in this ever changing world in which we live in...." Talk about trying tooooo hard!

Elton displays Midge-like indifference to the subjunctive too: in "Your Song";

"If I was a sculptor, but then again, no"

(sorry, punctuation in that last post went all over the place! That colon should be a comma and the semi-colon a colon...)

I give song lyrics quite a lot of leeway. Sometimes grammatically correct just won't work and the poetry demands something that would not be acceptable in the spoken language. Then again, writing in the vernacular is also not unreasonable, within limits. As long as it is not too-o-o-o strained, I don't mind.

Aero · 30/01/2008 23:24

The line that gets me atm is:

'I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket.' by Fergie I think, although I don't know the song title.

80sMum · 30/01/2008 23:37

Marge, I've always heard those Live and Let Die lyrics as "in this ever changing world in which we're living."

On the other hand, I can't help hearing Desmond Dekker's " Oooh, the Israelites" as "Oooh, me ears are alight!"

verylittlecarrot · 30/01/2008 23:49

The Corrs sing:

"The system has broke down
Romance has broke down"

your grammar checker has broke down

margoandjerry · 31/01/2008 09:11

Marge, you are so right about that Paul McCartney lyric. That was the other one I was trying to think of. And 80smum, your innate good grammar is overriding the horrible truth - that is what he sings. And your version scans just as well and is grammatical. You should have been in Wings instead of Linda McCartney

UnquietDad · 31/01/2008 09:25

I thought the Wings lyric was "in this ever-changing world in which we're living...?"

80smum got there first, sorry!

margoandjerry · 31/01/2008 09:27

sadly no

UnquietDad · 31/01/2008 09:28

Those lyrics sites aren't always official - sometimes they are just transcribed from listening to the song!

margoandjerry · 31/01/2008 09:35

Yes, because that is what he sings!

See here about 2.08 mins in.

God I am so sad. Supposed to be working

UnquietDad · 31/01/2008 09:39

I'll have to take your word for it m&j. I'll compare & contrast the Guns'n'Roses version next time I listen to it!

All Saints on the spoken intro to "Never Ever" - "A few questions that I want to know"

No, dears, you want to know the answers!

Couldn't TT d'Arby be saying "should've" ?

Swedes · 31/01/2008 11:32

It's nice to know that UQD is such an easy-going kind've guy.

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 31/01/2008 12:55

80sMum & Unquiet - thanks! Now I'm getting old & hard of hearing there's a good chance I can make myself hear "in which we're living" - cos I do love Paul really. And yes, me ears ARE alight...

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 31/01/2008 12:56

Swedes!! "Kind've guy"??? Do you mean "kind of guy"? Should you be in this corner...?!

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 31/01/2008 12:58

oh god sorry Swedes... I should of read the previous posts..

UnquietDad · 01/02/2008 12:07
