Pedants' corner

Every one - singular or plural?

I found Princess Anne's statement, released yesterday, very moving. However, the pedant in me spotted this sentence & wondered if "each and every one" should be singular or plural? Ie should it be "shares" rather than "share?"

"I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss."

I'd say 'shares' - If you replace 'one' with 'person', 'shares' makes sense and is grammatical.

I agree it should 'shares'.

She probably so used to saying 'one' meaning 'I' as a royal she got mixed up?

I agree - to check just take out the other part of the phrase:

'each one who shares'
'every one who shares'

I would agree with the plural but in this instance the singular makes it personal: she’s addressing the crowd one by one as individuals not as a mass of people.

I would agree with the plural but in this instance the singular makes it personal: she’s addressing the crowd one by one as individuals not as a mass of people.

But that doesn't make sense, @Weefreetiffany , because as others have pointed out, she has used the plural agreement of the verb. If she said "shares" that would be singular.

In my mind, I think the explanation is that she is thinking of the subject as "you", because you would say "you who share..." although strictly you would still say "each and every one of you who shares...", so it's an entirely understandable error.
