The correct way to write a date?

freezingmytoesoff · 29/08/2022 15:53

I'm arranging my save the dates and I can't find any conclusive advice online about the correct way to formally write out a date, punctuation included... can anyone offer any advice please?

19th August 2023, so should it be "Saturday, 19 August 2023"? Or something else?

I don't think there's any right or wrong way, but as you have already suggested 'Saturday, 19 August 2023' I hope you'll go the whole hog and put th after 19.

LittleBearPad · 29/08/2022 20:26

Do you need the ‘Saturday’?

FlippertyGibberts · 29/08/2022 20:28

I think the day is really helpful, I find it a bit bizarre when people write dates w/o indicating the day for things like this.

DramaAlpaca · 29/08/2022 20:40

I wouldn't bother with the comma. Just:

Saturday 19th August 2023

WhatICallMyUsername · 29/08/2022 20:54

I would do the same as @DramaAlpaca. Including the Saturday is helpful now people have so many weekday weddings! You don't have to go and check a calendar to see if you need childcare etc!

SaltySeaBird · 29/08/2022 20:57

I tend to go:

Saturday August 19, 2023

I put the number after the month as I read somewhere this was the better format, and is read equally well by the British and Americans but can’t find where I read that. It also looks nicer graphically keeping the numbers together imo.

interested in what others say!

Another vote for this one.

No, don't like that at all. Unless you have lots of guests from the US why would you need to do that?

LittleBearPad · 29/08/2022 21:25

August 19 2023 is dreadful.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 29/08/2022 21:53

I vote Saturday 19th August 2023

I work in a school and that's how we write dates on the board!

SaltySeaBird · 30/08/2022 05:16

I work for a company that has offices in the US so that might sway my judgment.

The above suggests the following as correct for the U.K. with no “th” added.

Who knew it could be such a complicated subject!

I remember this from school, pre computers.

I don't know what that article is designed for (reports?), but probably not wedding invites. I would put Saturday 19th August 2023.

I just don't think that flows at all, and feel crotchety from just having read it 🤣.
