Quote from the website of an expensive, upmarket spa hotel, obviously trying to drum up weekday trade.

I'm sorely tempted to point out the awfulness, but DH thinks we'll never be able to show our faces there again if I do

Whenever I point out misplaced apostrophes all I get is blank looks and incomprehension.
Much better to go in with a marker pen or tippex and put it right yourself.

Have you heard of the chap in Bristol who goes out with a ladder and paint at night to correct shop signs, billboards etc?

That's lovely! Sadly it doesn't really work on a webpage though.

I expect you're right and I would just get blank faces if I pointed it out

Yes, he's my hero! I quite often remove rogue apostrophes from chalkboards.

Comprehensible English is becoming an esoteric skill.

mrziggycoco · 13/04/2022 11:21

I want to know what rules these apostrophe abusers are using. I've seen sentences like this:

I went to the shops and bought some sweet's. -why the apostrophe there, but not there?

AND

I said to Sam his cabbage's were starting to smell like turnips.

I actually asked someone once and they said apostrophes were for plurals (but he put no apostrophes in the word "plurals")

I know I'm being obsessive here but I think about this every single day.

Can't you point it out in an unsigned letter? I know it's cowardly but you could convey the point without going on to their blacklist. If they think they're 'upmarket' they need your help to keep them 'up'. If you could add a short lesson on the different ways in which apostrophe's apostrophes are used it would help.

Apostrophes are for possessives, not plurals.

You've been misled. I'm not surprised you're confused.

BotCrossHuns · 01/05/2022 20:19

I know what you mean about trying to work out what rules the apostrophe misusers are using - I'd like to know so I can correct misperceptions in pupils. But it's very inconsistent. Words that end in a 'y', or an 'o' (or occasionally other vowels) are slightly more susceptible, but it's more than that. There must be some imperceptible difference that makes some words seem like they need an apostrophe more than others!

However, I can believe some of it is autocorect, as my phone still insists in puttung them in Monday's, etc I try to go back and delete it, but don't always spot them. I know that there can be times when Monday's is correct, but I'd have thought it would be less often than Mondays - or at least that the phone could distinguish an expression like Monday's fine, from one like Mondays are usually good for me.

viques · 01/05/2022 20:28

It’s not an apostrophe but can I moan about panini/ paninis.

butterpuffed · 01/05/2022 23:26

I wish that man from Bristol would make his way down here. There's a barber whose place is called Cushty Cut's .

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 01/05/2022 23:31

I'm not sure that's true BotCrossHuns.

I think with the apostrophe will be more common because you often say things like "Monday's gym class went well".

BotCrossHuns · 02/05/2022 09:24

yeah maybe it's an individual thing. Certainly in my texts, it's more common without, but the phone doesnt seem to learn that!

PortiaFimbriata · 02/05/2022 09:30

They fixed it!

Almost!

One small step for pedants, one giant leap for grammar.

clairemaddox · 02/05/2022 12:44

One of my hobbies is t to ask people why they use them where they do until they get veins popping out in their heads trying to explain it whilst simultaneously trying to figure it out themselves.
