I expect it has always happened, but I think it is much more prevalent now. I am speaking about the use of 'there's', when it is short for 'there is', being used instead of 'there are' or 'there're'. Have you had earlier threads about this? Here are some of this week's examples from Radio 4:-

  1. There's good examples of idioms........... Word Of Mouth, Dr. Gareth Carrol, 8.2.22
  2. There's going to be hundreds of thousands of people.......... More Or Less, 9.2.22
  3. There's other supply chains...... Today, 10.2.22
4.There's been some real issues......Brandon Lewis, 11.2.22
  1. There's some awful people out there......I'm not sure which programme, 11.2.22

Please tell me I'm not the only person VERY tired of what looks like trendy carelessness. (No, I don't sit all day writing them down, but I thought I would gather a few examples and get them off my chest here.)

I can see how this one happens, though: "Everyone, including the children, want to leave" (Harriett Gilbert, trailer for Book Club this morning).

It obviously ought to be "Everyone wants to leave", and therefore "Everyone, including the children, wants to leave", but because the children come next to the verb she has made the verb match them instead of its proper subject.

@pistolknight

What's wrong with 4?

There has been some real issues

More than one issue > "there have been several issues"

I am non-rhotic. Draw and drawer sound the same.

but one is draw & the other is draw-uh

There and they're don't sound the same to me

YANBU to be irked by it, as that is your right, but it doesn't bother me.

People is a plural noun. The singular is person. One person, two people. For the same reason that your example is also wrong, you'll see it if you get rid of "some real".

Radio 4, 11th August, Dr. Boyle -

"There's been academic studies......." Ugh!

There have been academic studies.......

“There’s” with a plural noun is fine and normal in spoken English.

“In speaking and in some informal writing, we use there’s even when it refers to more than one. This use could be considered incorrect in formal writing or in an examination:

There’s three other people who are still to come.

There’s lots of cars in the car park.”

I hear you, it gives me the rage too.

But I raise you the woman (not on the radio) who says "that onions". I kid you not. WTAF!😬

The contraction “ There’s…” with a plural noun is never acceptable.

Although “There’re…” is clunky, it’s actually correct. I prefer to use the words “There are…” in full.

Thank you, Cam. I prefer to say 'There are'. My mouth muscles haven't gone on strike yet because of the hard time I'm giving them.

I've just obtained a copy of a book which was given away in schools for a recent World Book Day. In several places it uses "where is my..." for plural items. Eg, "where's my glasses, where's my friends."

What chance do kids have if publishing houses can't get it right?
