A question from a slightly drunken American. Drunk enough to ask, I suppose.

I've never heard the word spoken before, and wonder is it

"will-st"
or
"while-st"
?

Read it plenty of times but not sure how to say it. A bit like the time I (at age 9) insisted that my new stuffed bear be called "Persa-fone" as I'd read the name but never heard "Persephone" pronounced properly.

I see "Whilst we allow unlimited name-changes" each time I open Mumsnet and wonder if I am mentally mispronouncing the word, every time I come to Mumsnet!

while-st here too.

I do this a lot too

BananaPudding · 01/01/2008 07:21

Oh good. I was saying "while-st" in my head and then suddenly wondered if I would sound like an idiot saying it that way out loud. But then when I tried to say "will-st" mentally felt stupid.

I used to have a pedantic boss who shuddered any time the word was used. while vs whilst I had no idea...

while-st

I thought Penelope was Pen-ell-ope when I was little. It doesn't look like Penn-ell-oppy, does it? Silly language.

Katisha · 01/01/2008 10:38

While is fine. Whilst is unecessary.

RoxyNotFoxy · 08/01/2008 00:51

Whilst is just a slightly pompous way of saying "while". Avoid.

Penelope is from the Greek, like Irene, and both should have the final "ee" sound. But these days it's always "Ireen".
