Shouldn't it be 'pique' their interest, not 'peak' their interest?

I've seen this a few times lately.

'This book may peak your interest'.

Isn't it 'pique', or is it interchangeable?

the wonder/wander one really gets me too! I imagine it is either because people hear phrases but never see them written down (someone at work once used 'raisen detra' he clearly didn't learn French or if he did it was too long ago) or sometimes they may be a typo or auto correct (I often wonder if he's/his is this reason)

Leftfelange · 16/01/2022 07:35

"peak" seems to be inserting itself into a few phrases where it's not welcome, most notably for me that Instagram favourite - the "sneak peak"! Nooooooo!!! It's peek! You're peeking! Stop it!

@loopylindi

I know language evolves but some things I hear set my teeth on edge: those ones, these ones.... he could of instead of could have ...and she was like, and then he was like...(Miriam Margoyles took on Will.I.am about this on a Graham Norton show...very funny) ...and then s/he went (what's the matter with 'said'

We have such an extensive language and yet we seem to be using fewer words

That's not language evolving, it's language being mauled. As is the overuse of "them" instead of "those" which seems to be happening a lot:

Look at them things over there!
Them lot need sorting out (old guy talking about the Government)
Have you got fake tan on them legs?

It sets my teeth on edge when I hear it or read it!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 16/01/2022 09:28

@Sparklfairy

It's definitely pique but I can see how people think its peak (i.e. 'heighten' your interest) if they're not familiar with the word.

I've seen many a debate here about 'another think coming' and it always seems really evenly split. I've never known which one it is for sure as when spoken the think/thing and coming roll into one, or at least they did when my mum used to use it when telling me off Grin

It has to be another think coming doesn't it? It's used to tell someone that if they think X then they have another think coming - ie think again, because you're not doing/having/getting whatever X means.

My 5yo daughter says "I'm good" when anybody asks her how she is. I have managed not to blurt out "Well! " in front of anybody yet.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 16/01/2022 09:46

@Ginandplatonic

It’s definitely think! As in you will have to think again and revise your opinion. Thing wouldn’t make sense.
It’s really not. It’s thing.

@Snoopsnoggysnog no it’s think, thing makes no sense at all. It means you will have to rethink your idea / plan and change your mind because you are wrong / what you are planning is not possible.

E.g If you think you are going to the park wearing your new trainers you’ve got another think coming - you will have to think about that plan and find another option. Thing would make no sense at all.

Ginandplatonic · 16/01/2022 10:02

It’s really really not. How does it make sense if it’s thing??

Angel2702 · 16/01/2022 10:04

Thing is very much like the American use of couldn’t care less. They have change its to could care less which doesn’t make sense. It’s a miss hearing and not understanding the original phrase.

HemlockStarglimmer · 16/01/2022 10:04

I have had the think/thing argument with my husband. He is wrong. It is think. As stated above, thing makes no sense.

HemlockStarglimmer · 16/01/2022 10:05

Ten to the dozen instead of nineteen to the dozen annoys me. It completely changes the meaning of the phrase.

Thirtytimesround · 16/01/2022 10:08

Definitely pique.

Seen people also say peek 🤦‍♀️

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/01/2022 10:18

On route instead of en route annoys me. And should of, could of.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/01/2022 10:20

I thought it was thing but not sure now

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/01/2022 10:22

Even Judas Proest say another thing coming Grin

Shouldn't it be 'pique' their interest, not 'peak' their interest?

Niche one: CAHMS instead of CAMHS.
It’s mental health not health mental!

😂 I’m not sure we should be turning to heavy metal bands as arbiters of grammar! Especially as they’re wrong

Of course thing makes sense. If you think you have one thing coming, but you’re actually wrong, then you very definitely do have another thing coming instead. They don’t have to sit and have another think before experiencing something unanticipated. It can just happen.

I think there’s no right or wrong with this one. I find it baffling that anyone could think it’s think. But I know that those in the “think” camp find it equally ludicrous that anyone thinks it’s thing!

Oh yes! And I have seen "on mass" as well.
Now I really don't know www.theguardian.com/media/mind-your-language/2014/nov/18/mind-your-language-another-think
After reading this it's all about context. "If you think that, then you've another think coming" - ie have another think about it as you're wrong.

"You have another thing coming" (that I have never heard used correctly) would be in a totally different context. Maybe like the old wives tale about things coming in threes? But it is definitely not anything to do with thinking again.

Justajot · 16/01/2022 10:42

I keep on seeing "He didn't seem phased by that". I'm pretty certain it should be fazed.

And also confusion over "cue".

The are quite fond of breaking the law!
