No views? Are both correct? Both seem to appear online (see, I have googled).

I've wondered this too. I will watch this thread closely

OhLittleTownOfBotlehem · 14/12/2007 15:25

I'd say poncy myself.

as in lacy not lacey
flouncy not flouncey
smily not smiley

can't think of any more (have hangover).

PestohohohoMonster · 14/12/2007 15:26

Poncy

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 15:32

Excellent - thank you.
I will be all right now as long as one of Mumsnet's professional disagreers doesn't turn up

Did you call?

I say poncey. But then using Bot's examples, I also say smiley!

Maidamess · 14/12/2007 15:40

Poncey. The former is ponk-y

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 15:41

I say smiley too

as does MN Towers.

Poncey, without any shadow of a doubt. You will note there is a soft 'c' in ponce, which turns hard if the 'e' is removed...

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 15:58

but don't the n and the slightly-vowel-like y manage between them to keep the c soft?

I am thinking too hard.
I'll just toss a coin.

thank you everyone.

Can I lob "bouncy" into the pot?

OhLittleTownOfBotlehem · 14/12/2007 16:12

Exactly. Therefore I am right.

Desiderata · 14/12/2007 16:15

You can, but it'll only bounce right out again!

I would say poncy, but I'm definitely another smiley girl. I can see the logic of the soft 'c', but poncey looks like it ought to be a small village in France.

SquonkaClaus · 14/12/2007 16:19

I'm ok with bouncy, lacy and flouncy but it's definitely smiley and as for poncy/poncey I just don't know

I think poncey looks slightly better.

TenLordsaLapin · 14/12/2007 16:21

Hey Desi

Desiderata · 14/12/2007 16:42

Ha ha ha! Lapin, that is truly uncanny

In fact, Desi, there are TWO Ponceys in France (and lots more on this board )

SquonkaClaus · 14/12/2007 16:54

Kathy - when you've finished your mince pies, there is a thread here which you may be interested in...

Kathyate6mincepies · 14/12/2007 17:24

Thanks Squonk! I popped over and it seems that the question had in fact been answered by NQC in the very second post but no-one had noticed

Sorry, probably too late to be useful. But Oxford dictionary says 'poncey (also poncy)'. So I guess they're basically interchangeable but 'poncey' is slightly safer.

OhMyGaaadThatsGrooosss · 16/12/2007 19:35

It has occurred to me: Tracey / Tracy -either is valid. So the answer must be that both 'cy' and 'cey' are correct. Useful motto for life: "When in doubt, use the Trace check"!
