How do you pronounce 'Clarice'?

How do you pronounce the name 'Clarice'? I need to know before reading dd1's Clarice Bean book to her!

IIRC Jodie Foster's character in 'Silence of the Lambs' was pronounced Cla-reese. But the name Maurice has 2 different pronunciations: Mo-reese in the US, and (usually) Morris in the UK. So should a British Clarice be pronounced Clar-iss?

Any thoughts? Or are there any British Clarices reading this?

I would have said 'Cla-reese', Clar-iss sounds a bit male for some reason, but hopefully someone called Clarice will come along soon!

tortoiseSHELL · 07/12/2007 13:21

Clareese Starling but Clariss Bean (as in Clarice Cliff).

sarahhal · 07/12/2007 13:22

Would prob say Clar-ees but with Bean would say Clar-iss. Don't know why, maybe I have heard it like that on Tv/radio?

flowerysantassack · 07/12/2007 13:22

Clarice to rhyme roughly with Paris is the English way. Clareese if you're Franch

tortoiseSHELL · 07/12/2007 13:25

It's definitely Clar-iss Cliff on Bargain Hunt!!!

TheStepfordChav · 07/12/2007 13:27

To rhyme with Harris. Cla-rees sounds US (I remember Joan Collins in Dynasty talking about her late DH CEcil- sounded daft).

tissy · 07/12/2007 13:28

Clar-iss definitely

Iklboo · 07/12/2007 13:29

Would say Clar-iss unless reading SOTL
