People spelling dinning instead of dining

I despair, I really do. Also 'are' instead of 'our'. Makes my teeth itch.

Have grammar standards gone massively downhill in recent years or is it just that we see more dreadful spelling and grammar because of Facebook etc? It's depressing.

Don't be a grammar nazi. It's not a good look.

TinnedPotatoesRock · 09/09/2021 14:49

This again

SukonthaM · 09/09/2021 14:51

There can be all sorts of reasons why someone is poor at spelling. I don’t judge them and would never correct them. Saying that I did laugh at someone selling a ‘comphy cowch’ on marketplace last night.

Quirrelsotherface · 09/09/2021 14:51

comphy cowch

Bit dramatic. I was interested if others thought standards had declined. It does make me cringe and I'm not trying to look good.

I am dyslexic and always struggle with double letters. I have two first class degrees so not thick just dyslexic.

TomorrowSomething · 09/09/2021 14:55

It winds me up too. I think it's partly social media / self publishing etc. - people who are unsure of the spelling see the incorrect version and copy it.

And nobody is allowed to say anything unless they want to be called a nazi.

Fwiw, typos & 'chatty' informal text don't bother me at all. It's usually easy to spot the difference.

InnPain · 09/09/2021 15:06

For me it’s “to” instead of “too” and funny thing is I made the exact mistake recently because I didn’t proof read it before clicking post. So I’m very annoyed with myself!

This.

The removal/packing men did this when we moved here about 20 years ago so no, standards aren't slipping. It's just with the advent of social media and everything being online it is more obvious.

Hopdathelf · 09/09/2021 16:45

I’m as much a pedant as the next person but there’s a corner for people like us and you should get this slightly ableist thread moved there.

Hazeyday · 09/09/2021 17:06

Worst for me is brought. It's a recent thing but so many people on Facebook and in real
life saying something like.... brought this from Tesco. No - you bought it from Tesco!

Hazeyday · 09/09/2021 17:07

Sorry, should say, bought it IN Tesco.

gardeninggirl68 · 09/09/2021 17:19

Lots of people don't have a great education and there are lots of people here, and in RL who are dyslexic. Or maybe English is not everyone's first language OP!

This is a sneery, embarrassing thread

Hazeyday · 09/09/2021 17:22

I know quite a few well educated people who consistently say brought when they have bought something.

MrsRobbieHart · 09/09/2021 17:22

There is a pedants’ corner for this stuff.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 09/09/2021 17:25

There was a guy on the news today talking about having 'less friends' and I was shouting 'it's fewer, not less' at the TV. Spelling and grammar are two different things and I'm sure some people are great at one, but not the other. But it's no different to not being great at adding up in your head, and yet I don't see loads of criticism for that.

Mamette · 09/09/2021 17:26

Not just recent years. “Dining” seems to be word that catches a lot of people out. I was a property manager for years and inventories often had “dinning tables” and “dinning chairs”.

Another frequent one was tenants telling me that they “had hovered everywhere” when moving out.

SoManyPaws · 09/09/2021 17:32

I find it much more annoying when people post shit like this in the chat section when there’s a whole topic dedicated to it. 😉

Quirrelsotherface · 09/09/2021 17:36

I honestly don't understand why people get so agitated by this subject. Clearly I'm not referring to those with conditions such as Dyslexia! Just those who could..but haven't learnt basic spelling grammar and genuinely wondering why.

Oh don't get me started on brought and bought! Also 'could of'.. where did it all go wrong?! Grin

Well I was in Chat and I just fancied a chat about it. Don't be such a pedant. Wink

How do you know that they could? You have no idea what their school years were like.

Threads like this come across as very sneery.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2021 18:03

Thinking about it, my brother's spelling and grammar are appalling. However, he can fix a fighter plane 🤷🏻‍♀️
