Pedants' corner

Have you noticed how many people say "Yeah, yeah, yeah" instead of a plain and simple "yes"

I've only just noticed presenters saying this - Claudia Winkleman says it a lot when she presents "It Takes Two". My DH has started saying it and I'm starting to notice an increase of people saying it at work.

It doesn't sound nice. I think it sounds quite dismissive.

(I can't believe that I am actually starting a thread in Pedants Corner. I apologise pedants for any spelling mistakes or bad grammar, I have read through my post. )

Desi/Santa - Reminds me of that Coutts joke: The bank that likes to say yah.

Threadworm - My toddler says 'Yeah, no', shaking her head for the former and nodding for the latter.

There's nothing new about it. "Yeah, yeah, yeah", meaning "get on with it", was used in my childhood. And i've just watched a Fawlty Towers episode where Basil asks someone waiting at the desk what they want - "Yes? Yes? Yes?"
