Disclaimer: English is my third language.

I've lost count of how many times I've read/heard the word "melancholy" used as an adjective.

It's so pervasive in Literature and even in song lyrics, that I've started to doubt myself.

Is it one of those words that just evolved and this is now common use?

The adjective is still "melancholic", right?

Checked dictionary and it's a noun and an adjective. I think melancholy as adj would be for something appearing sad, like a melancholy song, while melancholic would be more for someone who was suffering from melancholy. I don't know for sure but it makes me think of when victorians could have melancholia or be melancholic.

That's really interesting and it does shed some light on my confusion, thank you!
