It is would have and could have isn’t it?

Or am l losing my mind?

I also loathe random capitalisation (partly due to listening to lawyers draft documents with defined terms which are capitalised thereafter).

I can see my husband visibly twitch if I look over his shoulder at his presentations; he loves to use capitals wherever possible. Worse still, words aren't even capitalised consistently throughout the presentation. Just willy-nilly with no discipline whatsoever.

altforvarmt · 30/03/2021 15:17

I think that the word definitely is disappearing because of autocorrect. "I defiantly did not see anything" has become a common sight.

There are also non-autocorrect errors like "a viscous dog" (is it like treacle?) and "are family is going on holiday next week".

They drive me nuts but appear so often that so many people must think they're correct.

ScarfaceCwaw · 30/03/2021 15:28

I'm now picturing a dog just sort of slopping around on the floor (and naturally wearing a very confused expression).

"I should of went" is a particular dislike of mine.

And yes to 'que', although touch wood I've only seen it on Mumsnet so far.

altforvarmt · 30/03/2021 17:46

The misuse of que should get a response every time.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/03/2021 18:29

Yeah and some people write que for a queue!

Have a look at the position of this thread and the tread above on active threads Grin (feels a bit mean to screenshot).

It was that thread that made me start this one😳

OP posts:
TroysMammy · 30/03/2021 18:39

I know someone who actually says it when talking and yes I judge them Grin

TransplantedScouser · 30/03/2021 18:41

@dcb2

Cue isn’t right either

It’s queue

Sunbird24 · 30/03/2021 18:47

@TransplantedScouser not in the example that @dcb2 gave it’s not.

Cue the waterworks, there’s a queue for cake!
😂

dcb2 · 30/03/2021 20:17

Yes, I meant "cue" as in "get ready for the ....". But I'm liking the que meme (sorry, can't find the right type of e on my keyboard).

Can I also add "maybe" used on those occasions when "may be" is the correct form? Similarly, sometimes v some times.

UncleBunclesHouse · 30/03/2021 20:27

All my teacher friends do this and worse. They’re not even aware it’s a ‘thing’, not just being sloppy or forgetful. They look at you confused if you correct it. There is no hope.

Are they young?

None of my teacher friends do this, but we are mid 50s.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/03/2021 21:06

Yeah, I’m a mid 50’s teacher.

No one in my age group writes could of or should of.

I know language evolves, but this is just incorrect and it does my head in!!

I’m fine with ‘go town’ or ‘go library’

I guess l need to get a life?

Can I also add loose instead of lose, as in I'm going to loose the plot if I keep seeing it!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/03/2021 21:10

Gotten🤮

OP posts:
AdditionalCharacter · 30/03/2021 21:10

My DC say it, I'm forever correcting them. They just moan saying everyone says it like that now and it's evolved language Hmm

I can remember being taught it at school, do they not teach grammar at school now?

JSL52 · 30/03/2021 21:14

I'm noticing a lot of apostrophes on plurals lately, eg mask's.

You are - it's YOU'RE.
You're going
You're doing

Sunbird24 · 30/03/2021 21:24

I’m watching something with the subtitles on, they’ve just used ‘overidge’ instead of overage (excess rather than too old)

Chunkymenrock · 30/03/2021 21:48

I keep spotting none being used instead of non. Why would anyone do that? Sad

LizzieAnt · 31/03/2021 21:57

Gotten is grammatically correct though, @ArseInTheCoOpWindow. It's used in many varieties of English, for example American English or Hiberno-English. It's not an error like the other examples mentioned here. You're just not used to it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/03/2021 21:59

I hate it though!! It wasn’t used when l was younger!

OP posts:
Susie477 · 31/03/2021 22:07

Im inclined too give people the benefit off the doubt when they have bin writing on a mobile device as we all know auto-correct can hav a mind of it’s own.

But yes, ‘could of’ grates horribly when spoken, because it’s a ‘tell’ about background and education and I know that while people may not say anything, they will notice and they will judge. They shouldn’t, but they do.
