Staycations

I always understood that a staycation was using annual leave days/school holiday days spent doing day trips from home. However it seems to be used to mean a UK-based holiday away from home. Why the change in definition and am I fighting a lost cause in wanting the original definition to stay. If I go away from home for a few nights, even just to the next county, I'm not 'staying' anywhere!

You’re absolutely right, OP.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 27/03/2021 17:37

yup, it's not a Staycation if you are not in your own bed.

GreenBalaclava · 27/03/2021 17:38

You're right OP. A week away in the UK is a holiday, not a staycation.

onemouseplace · 27/03/2021 17:40

Totally correct OP. This is one that annoys me as well - a holiday in the UK is just that, a UK holiday.

NotSorry · 05/04/2021 09:31

It seems to be the media that are driving this. If I go to Cornwall or Wales or the Lake District, I’m going on holiday. It’s not a staycation.

VanillaAndOrange · 11/04/2021 13:53

I've always gone on holiday in the UK, so it would seem weird to me not to describe that as a normal holiday. I don't actually use the word staycation, but if I did, I would use it for a week of "being a tourist in my own town."

candlemasbells · 11/04/2021 13:55

It’s a holiday if you stay away somewhere else for leisure.
A staycation if you stay at home and do day trips

ITA, it's like people think that you haven't been on holiday if it doesn't involve a passport

Surely Americans would think it's a crazy way to look at things when they can travel 1000s of miles without leaving the country.

Absolutely this! I know quite a few people who do seem to think that going away within the UK is not a proper holiday. I don't know why but it really annoys me. Probably because most of my holidays are in the UK, and I think it's sad that many people seem to not appreciate how lovely it can be here.

I agree 100%! Sick of hearing it used incorrectly, too.

cherish123 · 20/07/2021 00:55

You are right. A staycation is where you stay at home - visit local attractions and have day trips. A holiday/break in.the UK is just that. Some people always holiday in the UK.

I've found my people!
A staycation is not a holiday in Cornwall unless you live there.
