Stop me judging people...

Please give me a kick up the backside and remind me that poor SPaG is not necessarily an indication of a person's intelligence, but possibly merely their lack of schooling or evidence of a certain negligence during their childhood...

... because when I read a poorly spelt email, with even poorer grammar, from someone I am trying to engage with (and ask a favour of), it makes my teeth itch and I immediately start to... well, judge them...

... which I am well aware is a bad thing to do.😔

I can't help you because I've judged you for your incorrect use of ellipsis.

FlamedToACrisp · 06/03/2021 23:53

I feel your use of comparatives in the second paragraph is a bit dodgy. Unless you're going to say 'worse' rather than 'even poorer,' it should be:

...because when I read an email with poor spelling, and even poorer grammar...

I’ve seen people use “too” and even “two” incorrectly today. I officially give up.

bloodywhitecat · 15/03/2021 15:59

It is. I was a child carer for my mentally ill mother, it had a huge impact on my education. I now foster, a lot of the children I care for will have similar poor engagement with education for reasons beyond their control. Don't judge poor SPaG, you have no idea of someone's personal circumstances and we are still good people.

Thank-you for the kicking! I truly deserve it😉

I used to find such things deeply irritating.
Until I spent years helping my dyslexic son learn to read and write.
He's a lovely young man, as bright as they come, great graduate job, fantastic problem solver and now very supportive to me.
But still gets 'to' and ''too' wrong. Still sometimes have to check which word he meant to use , in Whatsapp.
If you can discern what someone means, what does it matter?
Someone whose brain is wired differently may have put twice as much effort into writing a sentence as you would, and still have made mistakes.

My mum went to 13 different primary schools and 4 different secondary schools...some in different countries. She left school with hardly and qualifications and her spelling is poor at best.

She is the most intelligent person I’ve ever met.

I struggled with English lessons at school, I had extra tutoring but the use of punctuation etc just never seemed to stick.
