"MAT leave" makes my teeth itch.

It's not a fucking acronym. What on earth do people imagine it stands for?

Any ideas?

And while we're at it, R.E. for re (as in emails) and ROTA for rota.

NFA: not. fucking. acronyms.

What the hell is this thread about? Are you that bored op?

InfiniteSheldon · 08/09/2020 06:15

And why is do we say double u double u double u rather than World Wide Web when telling someone a www. address. The letters are twice the syllables to say

DebbieFiderer · 08/09/2020 06:38

Oh I am so glad I'm not the only one who has been getting annoyed by this!! I've been wondering whether it is a genuine autocorrect error or people really think it should be capitalised 🙄

Michaelbaubles · 08/09/2020 06:40

It’s autocorrect - my phone does it. Also wants to capitalise “til” if I’m texting someone to say “I’ll be here TIL 6” etc.

DragonflyInn · 08/09/2020 06:47

Well thanks op. I’m quite the pedant but had not really noticed this before. I bet I do from now on - something else to annoy me!

RHOBHfan · 08/09/2020 06:53

Plc makes my teeth itch. That IS a fucking acronym people. It’s either plc or PLC. Not Plc. Number of companies who get that wrong!

Orangedaisy · 08/09/2020 06:58

Agree with you OP. I always use MPA leave when I refer to it at work as that’s the official term for us - maternity/paternity/adoption.

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/09/2020 06:59

It's short for maternity. Is that difficult to understand?

Pobblebonk · 08/09/2020 07:00

@AldiAisleofCrap

It’s not meant to me an acronym , nobody thinks it is. We all know it’s just short for maternity, you know like Matt and Mathew.
Missing the point. We all know that that is what it stands for, therefore why do people write MAT (as if it were an acronym) rather than Mat.
Pobblebonk · 08/09/2020 07:01

Another one spectacularly missing the point.
DebbieFiderer · 08/09/2020 07:38

Actually, the people missing the point are actually making the point - they can't see the difference between MAT and mat which shows that there is considerable ignorance around grammar these days. (Please note, I am not calling those posters ignorant generally, I am saying they have a lack of knowledge of this specific point!)

Surely the point is the OP genuinely seemed to believe that people who write it with capitals think it is an acronym.

”What on earth do people imagine it stands for?”

It’s not that people here don’t see a difference between MAT and mat. It’s that the OP seems to think there are hoards of people out there who believe it stands for something. But in fact I’m sure that’s not the case.

GabsAlot · 08/09/2020 09:12

pac code- no its not you dont say code twice

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 08/09/2020 09:23

Re = regarding, surely

Bugger - I thought it was ‘reference’, as in with reference to .....

I have an ex who would watch me type emails over my shoulder and then nag and nag at me if I put "re. xyz" as the title. He insisted it should be "ref xyz". Which if i wanted to reference something it would have been. But the emails were always regarding something. (Usually something school related so regarding whichever DC it was)

RiftGibbon · 08/09/2020 09:26

MAT = Multi-Academy Trust
mat. = abbreviation for maternity

MrBucket · 08/09/2020 09:32

My autocorrect often changes things to upper case (so appearing to be an acronym) when I don’t want it to

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 08/09/2020 11:53

I always assumed it was an autocorrect - if people are on mat leave if may be that they’ve been typing something about the MAT form mentioned above and their phone remembers it. I don’t think anyone really imagines it’s an acronym or would go to the extra trouble of capitalising it for no reason. Confused
