An apostrophe challenge awaits ...

I'm writing to a group of people hence plural 'your' and reflecting on their progress over the past year -

"I will think back on your journeys' with a smile"
Or no apostrophe ...
"I will think back on your journeys with a smile" (or words to this effect)

Im pretty sure it needs the apostrophe as the journeys are the possession of the 'your' (plural group) but I am doubting myself!

I think it’s no apostrophe. There would be an apostrophe but in a different place if there was something belonging to the journey eg ‘your journey’s stories’ or similar.

But this is just a regular plural so no apostrophe.
I think!

solidaritea · 12/07/2020 20:59

I see your logic, but there's no apostrophe. "your" is a possessive pronoun. The journeys do not possess anything.

As an analogy:
Your shoes are dirty.
John's shoes are dirty.

"your" conveys possession in the same way that "John's" does. The shoes have no apostrophe because they are the possession. Same as your journeys.

You don't need an apostrophe, it's a simple plural.

An example of needing an apostrophe would be
at the journey's end - as the end belongs to the journey.

titchy · 12/07/2020 21:01

No apostrophe!

It's not the noun that gets the possessive apostrophe - it's the subject.

Otherwise it would be The childs dogs'

Davodia · 12/07/2020 21:02

No apostrophe, 100%.

cathyandclare · 12/07/2020 21:03

No apostrophe needed.

Osquito · 12/07/2020 21:03

Definitely no apostrophe!

GertiMJN · 12/07/2020 21:03

I don't think you need an apostrophe at all because it is a simple plural. The journeys belong to the people and that possession is indicated by the word "your". The journeys do not have possession of anything so no apostrophe is required.

GU24Mum · 12/07/2020 21:04

Definitely no apostrophe!

AlecOrAlonzo · 12/07/2020 21:05

No apostrophe.

AriettyHomily · 12/07/2020 21:07

No apostrophe!

LaceyBetty · 12/07/2020 21:07

Absolutely no apostrophe.

I'm pleased I asked! Thank you.

Out of interest, would it be different if I was writing about rather than to the students
Eg: I will look back on the students journeys with a smile . ..
Or "their journeys "

FredaFrogspawn · 12/07/2020 21:15

The students’ journeys.

Ironicpentameter · 12/07/2020 21:16

No apostrophe. Journeys is just a plural noun.

Ironicpentameter · 12/07/2020 21:16

The students' journeys.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2020 21:17

It would be students' journeys then I think

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/07/2020 21:17

No, again nothing belongs to the journeys. There should be one on students though in your next example.

‘Students’ journeys’. The journeys belong to the students.
