Pedants' corner

Your and you're

I can't take it any more. I could cry. I want to bang my head repeatedly on my desk. Why is it that people don't understand that if the intention is to say 'you are', it's YOU'RE? It's a contraction and the apostrophe represents the missing letter. So for example, 'what do you do with your cat when you're going on holiday?'

If you're not sure which 'your' to use, just ask yourself if you're trying to say 'you are.' Am I alone in my irritation with this? Is it me?

Pisses me off too. Yes it’s an easy rule to remember that the apostrophe replaces the letter. What about their and there. And don’t get me started on my biggest one which is “I done it”

moreofthegreenstuff · 11/06/2020 22:02

It's not you, it's them.

triple checks apostrophes before pressing post

'I dunnit' is dialect though - Essex/Cockney/Estuary.

For goodness sake it doesn't matter that much. Not enough to make you self harm anyway. Get a grip. Maybe those people are really good at doing something else.

I do not think there are any other languages where the word for 'your' and ' 'you are' are so very similar. Also people have auto correct which sometimes gets it wrong.

silverstarsandhearts · 11/06/2020 22:09

You are def not alone!!! Drives me nuts...

I'm also getting so pissed off at the many Americanisms that seem to have infiltrated everyone's language these days...

SUPER excited/fun/easy etc etc
a BUNCH of (fill in the blank)
my all time pet hate - I'm excited FOR Christmas/my wedding/the party etc …..It's excited ABOUT Angry aarrrgghhh - that one makes me want to scream!!

It's Pedants' Corner Destroyed. Weeping and wailing about these things is allowed here.

AdaColeman · 11/06/2020 22:11

Not as irritating as “could of” “should of” “off of” “she jumped of the bus”!

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 11/06/2020 22:12

My current annoyance is people using 'upmost' when they mean 'utmost'. The BBC does it regularly and I get brought up short every time.

@silverstars, oh yes! Excited about is ridiculous and makes the writer sound about twelve as well. Whatever happened to 'looking forward to...'

Oh yes so it is....good point....I used to be a pedant and a grammar fascist until I realised that people have different talents.....and that being over picky about it isn't the sign of a brilliant mind.

Still find 'should of ' bloody irritating though...

MBM18 · 11/06/2020 22:25

Agree!
I keep noticing lately 'his' instead of 'he's'.
Drives me nuts! Picture of a baby "aww his so cute" Angry

AdaColeman · 11/06/2020 22:37

Something that I’ve noticed recently is “Thanks for the well wishes”. Have good wishes or best wishes gone out of fashion? Where does well wishes come from?

howdidigettobe50something · 12/06/2020 06:59

I've not seen that one yet but I'll look forward to it! 😳

ChessieFL · 12/06/2020 07:09

Once you know that the apostrophe replaces missing letters it’s easy to work out which version to use, but I think the problem is that lots of people just haven’t been taught that that’s the point of the apostrophe in that context. If you don’t know that rule then it can be hard to know where to put the apostrophe.

JorisBonson · 12/06/2020 07:28

Brought / bought makes my blood boil.

"I brought a new top".

NO YOU DIDN'T.

lifestooshort123 · 12/06/2020 07:48

I would of thought its bound to be annoying 🤪

lorisparkle · 12/06/2020 08:03

Apostrophes in the wrong place, or missing altogether, annoy me. In education we have NQT's and TA's. I am always saying to my children 'what is missing or what does it own'.

Greentrees33 · 12/06/2020 08:08

I agree with this. It irritates me too. I have a friend who always says ‘I done it’. I always try to say it back to her but the correct way about something else but she continues to say it this way. Can someone please explain why this is incorrect and what the right way to say it is so I can try and tell her one day when I am brave enough!

I think it's an extension of "well-wisher", which is someone who wishes well for another, and has been around since at least 1590.
