Comprises of

I would always say 'is comprised of' but I've heard 'comprises of' quite a lot, too. Is the latter actually correct? Eg 'the house comprises of a lounge, kitchen, bathroom and three bedrooms.' It irritates me but I don't know if it's justified irritation!

No "of". Please no "of". "It comprises" includes an implicit "of". Of all my pedantic pickinesses, that's at the top of the list Grin. So the house comprises three bedrooms etc. I'd probably reword to "contains", or "is made up of", I don't like "comprises" in that context.

Agree! Definitely no 'of'.

Estate agents always get this wrong.

'Consists of' is fine though'

I don't think "comprises of" is correct. I think it's being confused with "consists of".

It's a bit estate-agenty.

Fudgewhizz · 23/05/2020 13:22

That's what I thought - it 'comprises'. 'Is comprised of' is still correct, isn't it?

FWIW, and I could be wrong, I've just had a think about this. "Comprises" or "to comprise" i think is active, but "it is comprised of" is partially active and partially passive? The more I look at "it is comprised of" the more convinced I an that it is also an abomination. It feels muddled and clunky to me.

'Is comprised of' is like saying 'is composed of of'.

But these days, anything goes. Innit.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/06/2020 20:49

If you think of "comprise" as being the same in its usage as "contain", it's easy. You wouldn't say "is contained of"; you'd say "contains".
