...seems to be people not knowing the difference between "none" and "non", so they write things like, "There were non of them left."

Also, when people write things like: I don't know the others' (I've left off the speech marks as they would obscure the apostrophe), what exactly do they think the apostrophe is meant to be doing? Do they think it just sort of comes free with a letter 's' like a plastic toy in a box of cereal?

YES! Non- and none.

It seems bizarre until I think that I pronounce these words the same and in many accents you don’t.

There seem to be a lot of people who don't understand which words they are actually using, even very common ones. Of course some people are dyslexic and you can't expect everyone to be a linguist, but I'm talking about very simple words such as his/he's, been/being, of/have (as in "would of"), your/you're, so nothing remotely obscure or literary - more like things you'd cover in the early years of primary school. I think people just don't read. (I'd say they don't care, but it's not as if it takes more time or effort to write "their" instead of "their", so I think people simply don't know.)

I assume on here a lot of it is autocorrect on people’s phones (as above).

But the have/of his/he’s stuff, when I was at primary school, there were plenty of kids who literally didn’t understand that these were different words. I can only assume their parents didn’t correct them when they learned to talk. The teachers were correcting them, and you could see on the child’s face that they had literally no idea what the teacher was talking about. If they’d didn’t understand it in school, it’s unlikely they’ve learned it since. Lots of people just have really poor literacy in this country.
