Pedants' corner

In a queue, stationary.

So I was queuing at my local Morrisons, waiting to get called forward to the checkout. I happened to look up, to see that the aisle that the queue was in had the sign Stationary. I wasn't moving at the time, but there were envelopes on the shelves.

They have just had a reorganisation in the store and moved everything around, so the sign will be new.

I didn't mention it in store as I didn't think they would care but I did sigh inwardly.

They could of checked that there sign was spelt correctly while you was in the cue GrinGrin

CherryBakebadly · 15/04/2020 00:40

Maybe it was a notice about the queue, not the products Grin

I’d email Morrison’s. I did this when I saw Boots was selling complimentary medicine. The signs were changed within three weeks.

Many years ago I worked the evening shift a local shop. They had a Stationary storeroom and a Confectionary Storeroom. Both had nicely printed labels which I changed by hand, every time. They reprinted them,
and then they laminated them. I still carried on.
Eventually I stopped and just sighed when I passed them.

As this is pedants' corner it is always worth taking it up with the store.

I get quite a few vouchers that way.

Marks and Spencer "All our fish and seafood are freshly caught" - no it is "is freshly caught". Even worse the latest government release.

"The NHS and Government are prepared ..." - no again it's "is" prepared. The way to tell is to take out one noun. All our seafood are freshly caught [I got £50 for that!]

Car and envelope

missmouse101 · 17/04/2020 20:45

E is for envelope!

I get irrationally annoyed by 'Call the Police'. Sorry, but Sting and his mates aren't going to be interested. You'd be better off calling the police.

@Thelittleweasel

I don't understand what you mean here. You can use a plural verb if two or more subjects are connected with "and".

Reallybadidea · 18/04/2020 09:46

@Astoatora54 yeah, I've been mulling over this too and don't understand the problem with those sentences either.

Astoatora54 · 18/04/2020 11:05

Yes, clearly I have too much time on my hands in lockdown! Here are my thoughts.

I think in the first example:

"All our fish and seafood are freshly caught"

Fish and seafood are two uncountable nouns but here they are perceived as one thing (after all "fish" is a subset of seafood) and this is emphasised by using "all". However, if the two uncountable nouns are perceived as referring to two different items or concepts, it would be strange not to use a plural verb e.g.

Honesty and resourcefulness are what I look for in a partner.

I don't think you would write "is" here as honesty and resourcefulness are two separate concepts.

In the second example (NHS and government) I don't know why you would take out a noun? That's not a rule I have come across. You wouldn't say:
Jane and John is released on bail - why is this different?

Astoatora54 · 18/04/2020 11:06

Meant to add - I think "All our fish and seafood are freshly caught" could also be argued to be correct - it's more a question of style which version you prefer to use.

clary · 18/04/2020 11:09

I quite like the idea of complimentary medicine. Give you a boost in the morning, oh, you look nice' 😂😂

I hear you on plural verbs with single entities, but I think "The NHS and the government" is two things so "are" is correct.
