I'm writing something about a shop. I don't want to keep saying, the shop's.... So if I refer to it as IT, does it need an apostrophe?

Eg. The Shop's square footage-could it become it's square footage. Is that apostrophe in it's correct?

Also can something like 'produce' be IT's? The produce has a flavour all of it's own?

"Its" - no apostrophe - if something belongs to "it". One of those weird exceptions.
"It's" always means "it is".

Does the produce really have one flavour, singular? I'd rewrite the sentence to make it clear what you're saying. It's a bit meaningless as it is.

You can also try synonyms for shop so you are not limited to just “shop” and “it”.
The apostrophe help above is CORRECT. Smile

Yes, “its square footage” is correct. It’s is only for it is.

The other thing you can do to avoid repeating “the shop” is to use other nouns in its place, e.g:

The / this premises
The / this unit
The / this retail space

and just mix them up a bit within your text.

Thank you all!

Just to be pedantic, I think “it’s” can be a contraction of “it has” as well, e.g. ”It’s been cold today.”

Karwomannghia · 14/11/2019 19:48

Oh yes of course!

Elieza · 14/11/2019 20:05

Agreed.

Marlena1 · 14/11/2019 22:15

It's always defaults to it is.

merryhouse · 14/11/2019 22:37

The thing to remember is that "it" is a pronoun, like "he"; "its" is a possessive pronoun like "his"

"It's" can mean "it has" - eg "it's got a flavour all its own": it's obvious from context which is meant.

As far as I am aware, technically an inanimate object shouldn't use a possessive at all. Thus you should say 'of the shop' rather than 'the shop's ...'
