Before someone points out my typo and assumes I'm trying to foist my N American ways on you all....

Saving there's nothing wrong with the way you or Americans speak. What's annoying is when British people start using American words when there are already perfectly good British English ones.

You do know that language is always changing, and that it has always been perfectly normal for languages/dialects to absorb words from other languages and dialects, right? It's all part of life's rich tapestry. Besides, we Brits mangle our own language through grammar and spelling mistakes far more than it could ever be mangled by Americanisms. Even Brits who venture onto Pedants' Corner are not immune to errors.

I tend to stop reading any opening posts which include this.

One thing I often notice in these threads is that people complain about neologisms, or mistakes, as if the phrase is something widely accepted in America. There are plenty of phrases in British English that MNers hate and a lot of the "Americanisms" are no different!

‘Gotten’ was used in Britain in the past - and ‘forgotten’ still is. It was taken to US by early settlers, and never became obsolete there.
