Where on Earth has this sprung from?

The use of "to which"? Just flung in in any context?

"To which this helped"
"Waiting on my car selling to which I'm going to buy another"

Just some examples I've read on here.

It's getting right up there with "alot", "afew", and other such made up bollocks Angry

'Atleast'

Why do people not recognise that 'a' is a word in its own right?!

To wit could be misheard for to which. That makes a small amount of sense.
The one that's really annoying me at the moment is cringe. I've seen 'it's so cringe' or that was cringe. She did this and it was so cringe.
To cringe is a physical reaction, a person cringes physically.
Cringe, now, doesn't even seem like a real word.

Butterisbest · 23/10/2019 21:36

I've typed it too many times

Ohyesiam · 23/10/2019 21:44

Hence why is my current pet hate.

To which Is in the same category as the non reflexive myself. People seem to think it makes them sound more formal.
I will restrain myself from saying what it does make them sound.

Butterisbest · 23/10/2019 22:04

Ohyesiam
Please do.
Those that use myself when it should be me or even I, think that it makes themselves sic sound well educated. I was told by a young lad that "if myself can help yourself at all, please let myself know"

Butterisbest · 23/10/2019 22:05

ohyesiam that should be please don't restrain yourself

Drogosnextwife · 23/10/2019 22:09

Or using "myself" when "me" would do absolutely fine, infact it should be "me" because "myself" is just wrong.

Or beginning every sentence with "So.....".

Theres another one that really winds me up, but I can't think what it is just now. I bet someone has already mentioned it. Off to read all the comments.

(Bluerussian ducks and hides)

GirlDownUnder · 02/01/2020 02:57

Noone - I see it everywhere now.

No-one is a noone said no one, ever.

PittstopPenelope · 02/01/2020 03:20

I've just seen '...have to of had...' on here. That's a new one to me

WatchingTheMoon · 02/01/2020 03:24

@Butterisbest "cringe" has been used like that for at least 15 years, it's slang and has been for ages.

Language changes.

Eminybob · 02/01/2020 03:36

Oh god I work with a “myself”er. I hear him say it to customers every 5 minutes and it makes me cringe. No point in correcting him though he is one of those never wrong people.

Namestranger · 02/01/2020 04:05

Sorry to derail but has anyone become across "soonest"?

"I expect a reply soonest"
"I'd appreciate you dealing with this soonest"

Makes me instantly less likely to go back to them Crown Grin

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/01/2020 04:09

A new one on me is 'aswel'.

@Bluerussian what’s the problem with “bored of”?
.......
It should be, 'bored with'.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2020 10:32

Thread title correction: From where on the earth has this sprung?

This is the sort of excessive pedantry up with which we will not put!Grin

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/02/2020 21:14

I get slightly peeved with people writing that they want to diffuse a tense situation.

I'm sure they mean de-fuse really, but I hope they don't work in bomb disposal: that could mean disaster if they did what they write.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 12/02/2020 10:08

@Bluerussian

It should be, 'bored with'.

Meh. I’m as pedantic as they come, but can’t get worked up about this. You’re just replacing one fairly abstract preposition with another, and also making the formation consistent with things like ‘tired of’ and ‘weary of’. It doesn’t fundamentally break grammar ‘rules’ in the way that replacing a verb with a preposition does in ‘should of’.

There’s a difference between resisting change because it makes things less understandable and resisting change just because it’s different (but not actually really incorrect).

puds11 · 12/02/2020 10:10

Cheers @readitandwept hadn’t noticed that but sure will now Grin

I’m sick of people asking for ‘advise’ on a matter.

puds11 · 12/02/2020 10:12

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime that has cracked me up! Now I have images of people waving diffusers around in tense situations Grin

DontCallMeShitley · 12/02/2020 10:40

It is rediculous, carnt get on with it atall.

Andylion · 14/02/2020 21:39

Hence why is my current pet hate.

I hate "the reason why" as the "why" seems redundant. I think I am wrong though. Sad

readitandwept · 25/02/2020 18:47

"we was"

"I was laying on the bed"

And I've posted about them before, but:

abit
alot
afew

All becoming more and more common and increasingly infuriating Sad It stops me wanting to reply to people! Which isn't nice, i know.

Had to get that off my chest.

Maybe all this gnashing of teeth will help us loose weight?

AlunWynsKnee · 25/02/2020 20:15

'Excited for' winds me up.
