Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

That is all. Grin I feel slightly better now.

OP posts:
DadDadDad · 05/09/2017 18:49

The irony of no-one replying to a thread with this title! Grin

Anyway, if you are talking about that faux business formality that some use it for ("If you identify any low-hanging fruit that will support these deliverables going forward, please come and speak to myself or one of my team." "Was it yourself who will be heading up the brand refresh piece?") then I'm with you.

I think some people are over-correcting because they know it's wrong to say "Me and John are doing X", so they substitute "myself" for "me", even when "me" is fine.

AgentProvocateur · 05/09/2017 19:04

God, I used to work with an officious wanker who always used "myself" and "yourself" instead of me and you. Twat.

RicottaPancakes · 07/09/2017 21:34

Very annoying

Rainybo · 07/09/2017 21:35

Oh I agree OP. Just use me!

Friendlylightupbear · 07/09/2017 21:35

So with you!

BlackeyedSusan · 24/09/2017 20:17

Ds's teacher is terrible for that. Drives me potty.

SerfTerf · 24/09/2017 20:21

Always in slightly nasal tones. Normally from someone officious in a call centre (no slur intended on call centre workers generally) Smile

Acopyofacopy · 24/09/2017 20:25

Too many teachers I know do this Angry

tigerdog · 24/09/2017 20:29

I agree!
We had afternoon tea recently and everything was presented and explained with a sentence that started "For yourself, we have" and then whatever tea/cake/savoury it was. It was infuriating!

DoomGloomAndKaboom · 24/09/2017 20:30

I find estate agents are the worst culprits. The only thing to do is outself them.

"If yourself would be interested in the property, then contact myself at the office."
"Iself am very interested - could yourself contact the vendors and arrange a time at themselves' convenience for yourself to show myself and mypartnerself around theirself property? Myself would be very grateful and as you also have my partner's email could you forward this to himself also?"

OuaisMaisBon · 14/10/2017 10:07

Just came looking for Pedants' Corner to complain about this very thing! Are reflexive pronouns no longer taught in schools? Mind you, I always laugh because it reminds me of Arthur Shappey in "Cabin Pressure" when people think they're being extra clever using "myself" and "yourself" instead of "me" and "you"!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/10/2017 10:09

Yourself is right in this regard!

Is the word I suffering from inflation and therefore not worth as much as it used to, so people feel the need to reinforce it or prop it?

Things like this happen in other languages. It probably has a proper scientific name. Think of:

French: moi, je crois...

Welsh (regional): heddiw'ma meaning "today". "Heddiw" means "today" but speakers feel that they need "yma"(meaning "this") there just to make sure you understand Grin

Minimammoth · 09/11/2017 08:16

Had to come on here, because it is driving me mad. Heard just now on R4 ‘there is a body clock inside of ourselves ’. Surely inside of us.
And do Spa staff go on special patronising spa speak courses?

campion · 12/11/2017 02:06

'Of' is completely unnecessary in that sentence too.

Radio 4 Shock

Boxerlover1958 · 17/02/2018 20:55

This drives me up the wall, or should that be drives myself up the wall!

littlepill · 17/02/2018 20:58

I, myself, remember being told off inE lush for thus. Who else can you be?

littlepill · 17/02/2018 20:58

Told. Off. In. English.

... also annoying!

ShatnersBassoon · 17/02/2018 21:01

Being put on hold by a call centre operative:

"Please bear with myself..."

If I hadn't have been waiting so long to get through I'd have hung up in protest.
