What's the difference between the two and their usage? Thanks.

House style - i.e. what an author or publisher or publication prefers. Usually there will be a preference for -ed endings or -t endings, and this will apply to lots of other words too e.g. burned/burnt, spilled/spilt etc. It should be consistent within the piece and not chop between the two styles of ending.

Huh, that's really interesting! I thought it must be some sort of different meaning, I never like saying leaped - it feels awkward.

Ah, you see I don't like -t endings - spilt and burnt irrationally annoy me. Grammatically they're both the same, so go with whatever you like!
