Please settle an argument for me...

Would have or would of. Which is correct?

The context is something I said to DSD. I said "if DH had agreed I would have named dd2 Cameron". DSD, with all her 13 years of wisdom is convinced I used incorrect grammar and should have said "I would of named DD2 Cameron".

Personally I think both are correct or at least not wrong but she is utterly convinced I am wrong so I offering it up to you learned people to decide.

Would have is correct. People think would of because when spoken it is often abbreviated to would've which should like would of.

Would have. Would of is categorically wrong but probable arises from a chronic misunderstanding of "would've" which sounds like would of.

'would have named' is correct. 'would of named' is definitely 100% wrong. It's come about because people pronounce would have as would've, and it sounds a bit like would of. But it's still wrong.

'Would have' is correct.

'Would of' is always wrong.

I've noticed lots of Teens using would of/could of/should of whilst talking but it's obviously wrong.

To be honest my grasp of the technicalities of the English language is casual at best. Her version didn't sound wrong to me but my version didn't sound wrong either. She was just soooo adamant.

Yes Cameron is a boys name in England but I like unisex names. Unfortunately DH didn't agree. I am still slightly bitter. She is nearly 4 years old.

Think about these usages.

Lily of the valley.
Lily have the valley.

Completely different meanings.

I would have eaten the cake. I haven't eaten the cake. We can all have the cake.
Is obviously correct.

I ofn't eaten the cake. We can all of the cake.
Is obviously wrong.
