Just catching up Jux

No, I love a good pedant thread. I simply didn't understand that people were typing per say.....

Jux · 20/11/2015 11:09

Chocolate for you Exit! Always enhances a Pedant Thread (and most other things too).

I'm pleased to say I haven't seen 'per say' that often yet, but there'll be creep and then everyone'll be doing it Shock[pearl clutch]

I have just used 'per se' on a thread, in italics. I thought of you, Maryz Grin

Thank you Grundy. I can relax now. It's important that sites like labourlist show the way. All is well. Wink

Newlife, if you can distinguish between nouns and verbs, practice and practise are easy. Alphabetically, N(oun) comes before V(erb). C comes before S in the alphabet too. Practice, advice, etc = nouns. Practise, advise etc = verbs. It's helping me remember, at any rate.

NewLife4Me · 21/11/2015 14:19

thank you Fingles

I'll think about that one, keep mulling it over and hope it sticks Grin

SenecaFalls · 21/11/2015 14:31

In American English, it's practice for both, but we do observe the advice/advise distinction.

Another way to remember is that "ice" is a noun. Advice and practice have "ice" in them.

Jux · 21/11/2015 18:55

The most important thing to remember, NewLife, is that we all make mistakes. I think that's partly why we have Pedants' Corner, so if something gnaws at me, but I don't want to derail or be unkind, I can come here and sound off about it.

I honestly don't think "omg, such ignorance!" or "what sort of person doesn't know x or y?" and so on.

I do worry when I see a mistake which is repeated and copied and repeated and spreads, so I do also hope that people will see a thread here and maybe that will stop it.

It's very wonderful to meet someone who is keen to find things out and open to stuff, like you too! I hope that doesn't sound patronising, as it's not meant to be at all.
