Pedants' corner

Is 'impactful' a word?

Please help me dear pedants.

One of my pet hates is "this problem impacts me" instead of "this problem has an impact on me". I think that's wrong (I hope I'm right about that....)

But is impactful a word? eg "our project must be impactful".

I had thought not. However I've just seen it used in a paper at work. I looked it up on Google and got mixed results (yes it is / no it isn't). So what's the verdict - is it a proper word used correctly in this context?

Many thanks.

I think not

Sorry I should have said 'fellow' pedants, not 'dear' pedants.
I'd love to be a pedant but I suspect I'm not accurate enough!

Erm, come on, people: www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/impactful

And:

Impact can be a verb or a noun, so either could be used. Personally, I prefer the former.

It can be used as a verb, but in this sentence, unless the problem physically bashes into her, it's an inaccurate use. Wink

I respectfully disagree:

"verb
3rd person present: impacts
?m?pakt/

have a strong effect on someone or something.
"high interest rates have impacted on retail spending"
synonyms: affect, influence, have an effect, have an influence, exert influence, make an impression, act, work; More

In the world of researching pack design and advertising campaigns, impactful is definitely a word!
