How do you pronounce 'Oxymoron'?

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 12:28

I pronounce 'oxy' 'moron'.
My DH pronounces it 'oximoran' - stress on the i. He's the weird one, right?

Ox-ee-moron

TheMoa · 15/05/2015 12:30

Oxy-more-on, I think. I can't recall ever having said it out loud Grin.

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 12:31

Just found this , think it proves i'm right! [smug]

OP posts:
DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/05/2015 13:05

The stress is in the second syllable so he is right.

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 13:09

Hmm, OED agrees with me

Grin that will teach me to click on the first google link I find...(some non-descript online dictionary thingy)

Oxy-More-On still doesn't sound as nice though, but always good when a dp is wrong!

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/05/2015 13:24

Gah! That Grin was supposed to be a Blush

I'll give up for today I think.

GooseyLoosey · 15/05/2015 13:37

This one of dh's favourite terms and he would say it just as you do.

PrimalLass · 15/05/2015 13:42

I thought it was ox-i-mirin too.

Grantaire · 15/05/2015 13:45

I can't even work out how your DP says it.

I pronounce it like you. Or 'the right and only way' if you like. Grin

MirandaGoshawk · 15/05/2015 17:17

You are right. I've never heard of the other way. I think that DrinkSangria and your DH should go & stand in the corner.

emwithme · 15/05/2015 18:08

Ox (the animal)
Ee (by gum)
More
On

Stress on the first bit of "more"

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 18:14

It's really hard to spell it out phonetically Grantaire, but i'll give it another try!

Ox
i (as in tip)
ma (as in marine? majestic?)
run

Emphasis on the i - second syllable.

The last 2 syllables are all squashed together so it's hard to hear the vowel sounds.

OP posts:
Grantaire · 15/05/2015 20:42

oxImmer'n?

ShootTheMoon · 15/05/2015 20:49

I'm uncertain but I have definitely heard it pronounced both ways by Cambridge English faculty. I actually prefer ox-im-eron to oxy-moron but have so little opportunity to use it these days...

msrisotto · 15/05/2015 21:01

YES Grantaire!

I registered for this account just to answer this question. I don't know if the "y" sound is correct at all, but ox-sim (like the game Sims or Simpson) er (like grrrr/er)-on I know is in fact correct. Even dictionaries don't have this pronunciation, and it is very difficult to hear someone say it the right way. I think society has actually changed the pronunciation and the old pronunciation is obsolete. But I know the pronunciation shown above is correct and may be the "real" way to say it. It may be the modern dictionaries that are wrong, but if you get a dictionary from the 50's or so it should have this pronunciation. Weird I know.

pepperpot99 · 17/05/2019 16:53

OK- SIM- OR -ON.

'Oksy-moron' sounds ridiculous.

Cedilla · 09/06/2019 11:01

As OP says - Oxi-MORE-on

Stress on 'more', pronounced with a short 'i'. So actually it does sound like 'oksy-moron' - why is that ridiculous? Confused I don't understand how 'ok-sim-or-on' would be any different.

Notcopingwellhere · 28/06/2019 10:20

@pepperpot99

You’re wrong. It is 100% definitely oksy-moron.

pepperpot99 · 28/06/2019 12:49

According to whom, Notcopingwellhere ?

That's my pronunciation. Or perhaps you'd prefer 'pronounciation' ? Wink

Notcopingwellhere · 28/06/2019 12:57

According to dictionaries and people who use the word in conversation! Are you that policeman from ‘Allo ‘Allo?

pepperpot99 · 28/06/2019 13:45

Nope, just someone who is pretty good with the language. Trust me, it's OK-SIMM-OR-ON. You simply cannot trust modern dictionaries - they have words like 'irregardless' in them Shock.

and just to be especially pedantic, surely that ought to be 'Hello Hello'?

Notcopingwellhere · 28/06/2019 13:59

You’re not “good with the language”. You are wrong. The OED is hardly a modern dictionary.

pepperpot99 · 28/06/2019 15:16

Yeah I'm good; calm down though Wink.
