Just that, really, it's been getting on my nerves for weeks. 'Invite' is a verb, not a noun! Thanks for the space to vent in.

Really? It's not traditional British usage is it?

I think "can I get" crops up in Scottish usage now and then.

Jessie's point about "gotten" is correct. There are quite a few examples of American usage that come from older British forms. "Fall" for "autumn" is another one. And British usage has preserved "forgotten," I believe.

I would say "it needs to be done" - it should be passive surely? As it "it needs to be done by you". You can't just miss out the verb and stick a past participle there on its own.

Although I suppose if you're using it to describe the state of the job you can use a pp or a gerund (finished article, finishing touch).

I suppose it's just what you're used to!

Sorry for the slight derailment!

I know the disinterested/ uninterested origin but it is still irritating.

Bored of, rather than bored by, anyone?

DH says 50 years of age rather than aged 50 which irritates me needlessly. He also refers to vicars as Rev x, which drives me round the bend, Rev bring IMV purely used for letters or introductions of speech makers. Not Rev Parsley said. It's Mr or Mrs or Miss or Ms Parsley said. Why it is that, when it's Canon, Archdeacon or Bishop Parsley I don't know. But there we are.

Being if Scats origin he also says Amn't I instead if Aren't I which is of course correct but is not used in England, I think.

Anyone read Angela Thirkell? Brilliant at this sort of thing.
