I apologise if this is an incredibly stupid question but could someone explain and demonstrate the correct way to use i.e and e.g. please?

I've just been discussing it with a friend and realised that I'm not actually 100? clear anymore.

My thoughts are that I.e = that is and e.g. = for example so in use I could say;

I like the colour of your car, i.e red.

Or

I like lots of colours, e.g red, purple and blue.

Would that be right?

Spot on!

Yes, that's it.

i.e to give further clarification on what you've already said. Kind of like "in other words" or, as you said, "that's to say"

e.g to give an example of what you've just said.

Looks right to me. The no-no is saying "eg red, blue etc" - you don't need the etc because the eg implies there are others and you are not trying to cover all possibilities.

Also, I think it's perfectly reasonable to write eg rather than e.g. but I suspect some might be sticklers for the stops (eg is so much easier on an iPad)

Thank you, my friends first language is Portuguese and although she speaks very good English she had asked for confirmation of the I.e/e.g. rule so i didn't want to confuse her.

It's been a while since I had to think about it let alone explain it Wink.

DadDadDad I'd say eg is acceptable too, especially on the internet.
