What does this sentance mean?

From today's word of the day email an opsimath is a late learner. Here is one of the examples...

1883 Church Times 9 Feb. 97 Those who gave the name were not simple enough to think that even an opsimath was not something better than a contented dunce.

Is he saying an opsimath is better or no better than a contented dunce?
I am presuming what the phrase means but can not be certain.

That is certainly very oddly phrased - far too many negatives. I think the upshot is the idea that even an opsimath is better than a contented dunce.

Having said that OP, I think you may have bigger worries than the construction of that sentence given that you've posted in pedants' corner with a screaming spelling error in the title Wink I think I can hear the pedants galloping towards this thread with pitchforks as I type...
