Earlier this evening, the person providing television commentary on the women's international cricket match was heard to say that one of the English players was the "taliswoman" of the team.

Surely not.

Well if it was a bit of wordplay, why not? Isn't creative use of language quite common in sports commentary?

If it was a serious attempt to be politically correct, along the lines of chairman / chairwoman, then it's a bit silly. I've never seen a problem with chairman referring to male and female.

The etymology of talisman is nothing to do with gender, IIRC it's an Arabic word.
So the commentator was wrong.
