Definately

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 12/07/2014 10:13

Argh! Wine

But they're two different words, with entirely different meanings. Makes my brain cry.

I wonder if it's partly autocorrect.

If I type definatly it autocorrects to defiantly.

So if people would write definatly then their phones will produce defiantly.

Defiant posters all over the place make me snigger uncharitably.

Dragonboobs · 12/07/2014 10:16

The amount of times I get parents in saying I've given their child the wrong spelling - argh No I haven't! Apparently one of the most misspelled words in English. Teacher btw.

AlpacaLypse · 12/07/2014 10:17

I would imagine it's the curse of predictive text

AlpacaLypse · 12/07/2014 10:18

Dragonboobs, that's bizarre!

A lot of people misspell definitely as definatly which my ipad autocorrects to defiantly.

Nanny0gg · 17/07/2014 00:35

Number of times, Dragonboobs.

It has completely ruined the word defiant for me.

AlpacaYourThings · 17/07/2014 00:44

Yes, they do.

It is the same with Angel/Angle. Very irritating.

SarcyMare · 17/07/2014 15:36

i will be honest here, i can't spell words with more than 3 vowels.
And i can never ever ever spell the word the op wants and always end up with defiantly (or some variation) and if i am not being very carefull it sticks.
I also never know when words are meant to have 1 or 2 L on the end which are ful and which are full.
So they may very well know but not to be able to spell.

Nanny0gg · 18/07/2014 22:47

But defiantly breaks down easily - de-fi-ant-ly. So I don't understand the confusion.

I'm with Scarcy here - my spoken vocabulary is in the 96th centile in a peer group of university graduates (according to Ed Psych), but being dyslexic means I can not for the life of me work out how to spell a great number of words - for instance, I wouldn't have a clue which was correct if I was trying to write it out. Doesn't mean I am thick and don't know the difference.

Mrsrochesterscat · 18/07/2014 22:54

*difference in meaning
