One's = acceptable.

Ones = totally flamin' incorrect.

How may times do we hear 'those ones', these ones', 'blue ones' etc.?

CorusKate - hooray, someone else who reads Language Log!

So there are plenty of educated British English speakers out there (I'd like to include myself in that) who will continue to use "those ones" without any hesitation that it is some how unacceptable. Why does it upset some people to hear this usage?

Language Log is written by academic linguists, so some of the stuff on there can be quite dry and technical, and there's one guy who is an oriental specialist, so posts lots on Chinese etc. However, more light-hearted nuggets crop up (including funny mis-translations from Chinese into English), and the comments on posts are normally civilized and intelligent.

Some overlap with Lingua France blog that I also find interesting (USA biased, so not everything is relevant). This post is thought-provoking especially for pedants:
