Blood / bloods

People often say they are getting their bloods taken.

Is it not just blood? Millions of tubes of blood is still just blood.

Anyone know why people always say bloods?

It's because Drs refer to it as bloods due to the numbers of different tests they do on it.

I think it's getting their bloods done, rather than bloods taken. Bloods is short for blood tests, in accepted technical usage.

I see.
I'm kind of asking on behalf of someone that works in the industry and it drives her potty Grin

Yeah, getting bloods done.

But it's just blood. You could say you were getting your blood done, couldn't you?

I think we use it as an abbreviation for blood tests, plural.

And it makes us sound like we work in ER. We need bloods done, stat Grin

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 02/06/2014 22:23

But you're almost always getting more than one blood test done, so a plural seems appropriate.

Doing / Taking bloods means taking several blood samples in separate bottles.
If its just one sample we usually say take her INR or whatever.

Also you can say...can you take blood for INR FBC UE etc .. but grouping all of them in quick speak it would be can you do routine bloods please. Bloods means the samples / tests not the substance.

Bloods.

Meds.

When did meds become common usage?

I am irrationally bothered by it!

Gripneededfast · 02/06/2014 22:27

I prefer it to..she needs to be bled....or can you bleed her !

LettertoHerms · 02/06/2014 22:28

It's different in the US, it's always "getting blood drawn" or "blood taken". I always assumed after seeing it here that it was the same as how we differ in math/maths.
