I refer to my better half as "Belovéd". Or should that be "Belovèd"?

I asked a French teacher, but he didn't know.

I was trying to find a formal reference, but can't because the internet is not accurate enough (and my google fu is weak this morning).

Think about it, though - if it was "Belovéd", it would be pronounced 'be-luv-ayd'.

If you read some Shakespeare texts, you will see 'bewitchèd', enpiercèd, damnèd etc, as he used this a lot to help his lines to scan.

A French teacher wouldn't know because it's not French Wink

English only uses accents poetically. If you are talking about your beloved, you don't need an accent at all. Poets used to use them to distinguish (for metre) between beloved and belov'd.

Modern English always pronounces beloved "be-luv-id" and never "be-luvd" anyway.

But if you do want to use one, it's the downhill one.
