Pedants' corner

Silly question but grey is grey and not gray, isn't it?

I need to incorporate this word into a painting I'm doing and if I get it wrong it will be a very expensive mistake to make.

I'm sure it's grey but the 3 people I have just asked all said gray.

Am I right? Or have I been spelling it wrong all these years?

Hmmmm is it one of those words that can be both, or a IS vs UK thing?!?

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/11/2013 17:27

USA is gray.
UK is grey.

meditrina · 18/11/2013 17:28

It's like colour is colour, not color.

Grey is the normal UK spelling; gray in US.

rwepi · 18/11/2013 17:28

Yes, grey is the colour. Gray is a name. Although now you've made me want to check!

Confitdecanard · 18/11/2013 17:30

Definitely grey if you are in the UK. Gray is American.

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 18/11/2013 17:35

I was doubting myself there, I actually don't think I have ever had to write it down before so I checked google, which gave a mixture of both, and then phoned my brother and a couple of friends who all said gr-a-y.

I'm in the UK so I'll stick with gr-e-y. An e will be easier to change if it should turn out to be wrong too Grin

Thank you.

It is definitely grey

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 18/11/2013 17:43

exactly as Trucks says

eithet can be a name though

Selks · 18/11/2013 17:44

It's grey.

Gray is the US spelling.

This drives me potty actually (not having a go at the OP - it's an easy mistake to make) as I reckon the fact that people are not sure whether it's grey or gray is due to the creeping Americanisation of UK english, mainly due to spell checkers having as default the American spellings, so people in the UK are beginning to use US spellings without realising.

It's a slippery slope, I tell ya, a slippery slope! Grin

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 18/11/2013 17:47

My spell checker is set to Norwegian and I have no idea how to change it so I can't even blame spell check Grin

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 18/11/2013 17:58

and there's no such word as eithet.

SofaKing · 18/11/2013 18:02

My sister was corrected for spelling it grey instead of Gray in primary school. The teacher wouldn't listen to my parents when they told her she had it wrong, so they sent her to school with a dictionary to prove they were correct.

They would have LOVED Pedants' Corner!

It's easy to remember

GrAy - American

GrEy - English
