All those threads at the start of the new school year recently. All those mentions of making 'a pack lunch' or 'pack lunches'.

When you are making the lunch, you pack it, into the lunchbox.

When all the contents are in, its a PACKED lunch.

It's also called 'bait' in the NE.

But yes, packED.

No argument.

yourlittlesecret · 19/10/2013 14:44

I think they call it a "piece" in Scotland. My dad used to say it was his snap.

A boxed set - a set of DVDs or books which have been put in a box = boxed, no?

Packed lunch. Boxed set. Shared drive. FIL used to insist upon referring to his "motor car".

never heard it referred to as a pack lunch
When we first got married I was very confused with DH and his bait box (he's from the NE)
A bait box was what my dad used to keep his maggots in before he went fishing.
When DH kept asking if his bait box was in the fridge, it reminded me of when my dad used to keep is in the fridge. Full of maggots.

mawbroon · 19/10/2013 17:09

Smile Ken would be great! Grin

Mim78 · 21/10/2013 19:58

In my house it is called something I am never doing as I am not your slave!

(To be fair dd likes her school lunches - can I start a sub thread about not calling the dinners? Better not. But this is what it would say if pressed. Am aware grammar in this post is terrible for pedants' corner!)

MadeOfStarDust · 21/10/2013 20:07

pack lunch here - as it is lunch in a pack...

not packed in a box,
or packed in a bag,
packed in a pack -

a little back-pack
for my nice tasty snack...

I have read WAY too much cat-in-the-hat lately.....

makingfruitcake · 22/10/2013 19:52

Also hate mash potato. The potato is mashed, why is it so difficult?

MiniMonty · 23/10/2013 00:53

Bait box is just slang (therefore fine).
As is pack up.
Slang is lovely and it keeps the language rich and fabulous.

For standard rules it is of course a "packed lunch" because it is a lunch which has been packed in some or other way to be easily portable.

Boxed set is an easy one.
A set of (anything) which has been boxed can properly be referred to as a boxed set. Could be a boxed set of shrunken heads or windscreen wipers.
A "box set" is, as previously and correctly mentioned, only right for a set of boxes.

Case solved.

PervCat · 23/10/2013 01:22

I agree with op

PervCat · 23/10/2013 01:24

My thing is the strange emphasis on compact when used with discs compared to anything else compact.
Eg comPACT discs
Oh yes it's quite compact

Try it

keelo123 · 23/10/2013 05:10

Haha- I love it!! I remember a similar kind of confusion that my niece suffered with the term 'in-set day' and when bringing it up in a conversation she innocently couldn't remember the word and said 'I have a mini-beast day or something on Friday'. I still laugh about this although it was about 8 years ago! It's great how the mind can take over!

keelo123 · 23/10/2013 05:12

My last post refers to 'a pat lunch'!! Lol

ohmymimi · 23/10/2013 09:58

Stardust - But your snack in a pack is packed in the pack for your back.

PinocchiosLeftNostril · 23/10/2013 10:01

With my Glasgy accent, it's a pact lunch. Smile But I write is as packed lunch.

Actually, wouldn't that be the same with all accents? Confused
