I'm having an "its"/"it's" issue - help!

Having been able to use these instinctively for years, I've suddenly gone blank. Which is an abbreviation of "it is" and which denotes possession? And is there a third form I've forgotten about.

This has happened to me before. A few years ago, I forgot the existence of the word "whose" which caused me problems for weeks until I saw it written down somewhere and just thought "oh!".

it's is an abbreviation of it is

Its is the possessive, so just as his and hers don't have apostrophes, neither does its.

It's means it is.
